PMU FAQs

  • PMU stands for permanent makeup.

  • Permanent makeup is a form of cosmetic tattooing, usually done on the eyes, brows, or lips to resemble makeup. It is very superficial and only done to the upper most layer of the skin which is why permanent makeup fades and needs to be touched up.

  • Powder brows is a form of permanent makeup that uses a machine. It’s designed to create eyebrows with a soft powdery finish. Powder brows are shading only, and usually resemble a makeup filled brow.

  • Nano is very similar to microblading at first glance but it is a different technique. Nano uses a single micro needle and a machine in order to implant pigment into the skin resembling individual hair strokes. It gives you a very natural looking finish.

  • Microblading uses a hand tool and a configuration of needles resembling a blade, to implant pigment into the skin in order to create hair-like strokes. Both powder and nano use a machine and a small needle to implant pigment into the skin resulting in either a powdery finish, or hair-like strokes. It's the same concept but a different technique. Machine work (powder & nano) usually has better, longer lasting results, and is more gentle on the skin. Unlike microblading, most people are good candidates for nano or power brows.

  • Permanent makeup is not very painful. Although everyone has a different pain tolerance, generally brows are no more than a 3 out of 10 pain wise and lips are no more than a 5 at times. Topical numbing can be applied although it doesn't completely numb the skin and can dissipate throughout the service.

  • For both bows and lips you should expect to be there anywhere from 2-4 hours, depending on the artist. A lot of this time may be taken up from mapping and not the actual tattooing.

  • The longevity of your PMU is dependent on many factors, but you can expect it to last between 2 and 5 years before needing a touch up. Because it is such a superficial service it does fade more than a regular tattoo. At some point you may feel like you need a color change, shape change, etc. It is considered permanent because it can't be washed off and parts of it will always be present.

  • There are some things that you should and should not be doing both before and after getting these services. You should 100% be able to do all your normal activities, but do want to be cautious of what you are doing for the first two weeks. You shouldn’t be swimming, excessively sweating or having large amounts of sun exposure. All pre and post procedure recommendations are gone over during your initial consultation.

  • The healing process is like riding a small roller coaster for about the first week. You might experience color changes as pigment settles, color disappearing, flaking, or slight peeling. You may also experience a little redness and a little bit of swelling directly following the procedure, which usually goes away within a few hours. PMU takes a full 4-8 weeks to completely heal.

  • Everyone can benefit from a touch up 4-6 weeks after the initial service. The providers at The Face Space require a touch up 4-6 weeks after your initial service. If you touch your brows up a year or two after your service and a lot of work has faded you will have to pay full price again, so take advantage of that first touch up. After that first touchup you may not have to touch up again for a couple years.

  • Color for brows will be chosen by you and your artist based on skin tone and hair color. Lip color will be chosen by you. Keep in mind that the color doesn't look the same in the skin as it does in the bottle. You could put the same color on two different people and it will look different due to the base color of your natural lips/skin tone.

  • A cosmetic tattoo that enhances your natural lips color, shape, and appearance. It leaves your lips with a wash of color of your choice. It can slightly enhance the lips natural shape but does not make the lips bigger. If you are trying to change the shape or size of your lips, filler is probably a better option for you.
